Problem Solving With A System

 

1. Client describes situation.

 

2. a) Counsellor(s) ask questions to understand the situation.
Do not use "Why?" questions.
Do not propose solutions at this point.
b) Counsellor(s) state problem as they see it, phrasing it as a question beginning with "In what way might .?"
c) Client selects best statement of problem.

 

3. Do not propose solutions at this point.
a) Client and counsellors(s) brainstorm solutions.
b) Client reduces list of solutions to five by elimination.
c) Client states five most important personal values ( life criteria, goals, motivators)
d) Enter solutions and values on the chart below. Rate each of the solutions against each value on a scale of 0 to 5.
e) Add horizontal totals.
f) Client and counsellor(s) develop plan to carry out solution(s).

 

4. Client carries out plan.

 

5. Client evaluates plan.
