What is a "listserv"?

A listserv is a system that facilitates the broadcast of email to those who have subscribed to the list. After a person subscribes (more on this later), s/he will receive any email posted to the list by anyone else on the list. When a person replies to listserv mail, it will automatically send the reply back to the list unless you change the recipient's name.

To subscribe, enter your email address and click Join.

Traditionally listservs dispense with the normal written formalities of "Dear Mrs. X" and "Sincerely" as these are for more formal situations. The concept of the listserv is to take the common spoken language into the written form in order to get the message across.

Just as the formalities of the written language are over-looked "speling misteakes or grammer dont mater" as much as the intent of the message.

If you have any questions/problems about the listserv, PLEASE ask.

Posting a Message

In order to post a message to the listserv, send email to calsca-l@yahoogroups.com and everybody who has subscribed to the list will receive a copy. Due to the way the system works, it may take up to 20 minutes for your message to show up on the system.

There has been some confusion about the first part of the address.  To clarify, there can be no spaces in the address, it is all lower case and the -l is a lower case "L" not a 1 (one).

When you provide a subject line in your posting (highly recommended) it will show up with the prefix CALSCA-LIST: so that you can track which mail is being sent through the listserv. I encourage you to subscribe and send a test message to the listserv so you can see how the system works. If you have any questions, please send e-mail to info@calsca.com, or to the listserv so others may benefit from the information.

Remember that when you send out something to the listserv, EVERYBODY gets a copy, so please consider confidentiality before sending.

The Listserv Archive

Sometimes before deciding whether or not to join a list it's helpful to look at past messages that have been posted. This can help you get a sense of the topics discussed, the tone of the list and the interests of the other list members. Past messages are kept in an "archive" usually stored on the server hosting the list. To view the CALSCA archive, go the CALSCA LIST ARCHIVE
