3. 11/01/98 - A Major Update

Hello CALSCA -

Last week I put the Homecoming Conference brochure into Upcoming Events on the Website:

http://web.idirect.com/~calsca

and forgot to ask you to print it , pass it around, and send your own in PDQ! So please, print it, pass it around, send in your own, PDQ!

There's a lot of new info on the Website:

  1. In Accreditation, look in SLSA's section for Extracts from their Mentors' Manual.
  2. In Ethics and Standards, you'll now find ASLSC's Ethics and Standards Document and their Criteria for Recognition of Life Skills Coach Training Programs.
  3. In the Newsletter Archives, you'll now find the text of Volume 1, Number 5 (June, 1994) - thanks to Colleen Zeller for supplying this gem!
  4. The Links page now has a link to Search Tips to go with the Infoseek Search Engine.
  5. Of special interest to new CALSCA visitors may be the complete text of the email bulletins (of which this is one) since I started sending them July 31, 1996. There's a lot of information in there!
  6. In Upcoming Events you'll find the following announcement that I received yesterday from Jack Mitchell:

Ron Blechinger, career counsellor and Jack Mitchell, Life Skills group counsellor and coach trainer have been invited to present at the National Consultation on Career Development (NATCON) 26-28 Jan.98 in Ottawa, Canada. NATCON is in its 11th year of activity as the largest bilingual international conference of its kind addressing career development and employment-related issues. Some 180 different workshop sessions and seminars will be scheduled with Jeremy Rifkin, author of the best-selling study, The End of Work, featured as a key note speaker.

Ron and Jack will present their session titled, "Employability Skills Gained in Life Skills: Research Findings" which represents the work of a nine-year assessment study of changes in the attitudes and behaviours of clients completing Life Skills training groups in adult training centres in Regina, Saskatchewan. Ron Blechinger is a former Life Skills coach and currently involved in career skills development counselling with 20 years of experience. Jack was part of the Sask.NewStart curriculum development team for the Life Skills Program and has been involved in adult Life Skills group counselling for 25 years and is the Director of the Emma Lake Coach Training Program.

    Jack Mitchell

Special thanks to SLSA and ASLSC for passing on the new info, I'm really happy to include it in the Website.

5. 03/03/98 - Help! and a job too

Hello CALSCA -

The following arrived in my emailbox recently. Can anybody help Lorraine out? She's at:

lorry_lourie@geocities.com

Dear Rod:

I need some assistance with a lesson. I have an entire group that is taking medication and they all have ISSUES about their meds. I understand these issues because my disability means that I take them too. There is plenty of resentment and a great desire for non-compliance. An example is that: If I don't take my medication my illness will go away. Every day I take my meds I am reminded of my illness.

I know there is a lesson in the "Y" books about patient rights. My fellow team members have concerns that if we do a lesson we might contribute to the problem. I agree, however we still need to talk about this. Do you know of a lesson or have any ideas.

My idea is to discuss how medication works and the requirement to continue taking your meds until your MD tells you other wise. The flip side here is that there are new generation drugs that do work better than some of the old ones and have less side effects. The trick will be to get the clients to understand the why and continue to maintain compliance.

I would be grateful for any pointers or ideas you may have.

Thanks Rod.

Kindest Regards,
Lorraine

They are giving us their lowest nightly rate ($48.95 for single; $55.95 for double). 8. 30/03/98 - Employment Services

Hello CALSCA -

New to the Website (http://web.idirect.com/~calsca) is Employment Services, located on the Employment Opportunities and Services page. Along with the HRDC Job Bank (http://jb-ge.hrdc-drhc.gc.ca/) is a link to Headhunter.NET (http://www.headhunter.net/), a free resume and job bank site.

Also new (and a tip of the hat to the ASLSC Executive), is the complete text of the Alberta Society's Accreditation Competencies. You'll notice some subtle and some dramatic differences between these and the BC Pilot Project Competencies, also on the Website. I hope to include Ontario's someday (the template for the Alberta and BC documents).

There's still a tiny window of opportunity to get the early bird price for the Homecoming Conference. Print the registration form from the Website (follow the link in Upcoming Events) and fax it to Dori Britski (1-306-953-4485) before midnight, March 31, along with your solemn assurance that the cheque is in the mail. And mail the cheque! After March 31, the price goes up $25 in each category.

12. 23/04/98 - Homecoming Update

This in from Tia:

Hi Folks!!

We've made some decisions and are holding off on a few more. Still the clock is ticking.... I'm having real problems finding time for phone calls, e-mail, etc. so please bear with me. We've heard from Jay Moore (still go ahead, can't come though); Colleen and Dave Zeller (they're coming and bringing Paul Bagordo); Rod and Devra (they'll be here); Jack Mitchell (coming); Jean Esson (coming); Jean Jones (postpone - too small, probably won't come); Kathie Bird and Trygve Lee (still coming); Sharon Hurd-Clark (has it on her calendar); Marg Foster (coming); Marilyn Waldner (coming); Doug Pederson (supports idea but probably can't come); Karen Bonesky (supports idea but probably can't come).

Those are the people I know about. I talked with Dori last on Tuesday, so she could've gotten more calls by now. Anyway, here is the plan as it stands:
The conference has been toned down to a gathering since we only had about 30 people coming. It'll start on Friday evening with registration from 7 to 10 p.m. We'll still have Jim V. come in Saturday morning with a regular CALSCA meeting following afterwards. In the afternoon we'll still have workshops so please bring your workshop stuff in case you need to do it (Jack, Sharon, Paul, Bea, Devra, Rod).

We were planning to give workshop people a $50 honorarium, but now we don't know if we'll have enough so, this could be pro bono work....... Since we have to pay for fewer meals and we're getting a smaller meeting room, the cost will be lowered to $100.00. We'll give you refund cheques if you've already paid the $150.00 when you get here. You could use it to buy a beautiful "Saskatchewan Life Skills" sweatshirt!!

Prince Albert is a 90 mile drive from the Saskatoon airport down one of only two major highways heading north. Highway 11 goes right past Waneskewin, a large Native cultural centre which has the most amazing energy levels!! Definitely worth a couple hours of your time. The Marlboro Inn is tall by P.A. standards (6 floors I think) and only 1 1/2 blocks off Hwy 2. Prince Albert is small city of around 30,000 people and only a few tall buildings, so it would be very difficult to get lost. If anyone wants more detailed travel info, there must be a way on the net to access travel information, or your local CAA has maps for free for members.

There you have it folks!! The good thing about this is we don't have to do much prep work so don't expect anything fancy, just lots of good times and great (re)connections. Big relief for us time ways. We'll be very glad to see those of you who can make it. Those who can't will be sending us good energy....

SLSA had planned to host its AGM on Monday May 18, but we've decided to put that off till the fall. The date will be announced in the May newsletter.

Take care folks!! See you in a couple of weeks......

13. 24/05/98 - George Reed and more

Welcome George Reed, earthway@sage.ark.com, to the Coaches On The Net page of the CALSCA website, http://web.idirect.com/~calsca. See George's comment in the Guestbook.

The 1998 Prince Albert meeting was an interesting and exciting gathering. 25 coaches from Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and BC attended the scaled down Homecoming Celebration, and you bet we celebrated! Jim Vicharyous as Keynote Speaker, assisted by Jack Mitchell, filled us in on the early history of NewStart Life Skills. Paul Bagordo, Devra Poitra and Tia Shynkaruk delivered incredible, powerful workshops. And, close to my heart, we did some CALSCA business as well, to be reported when I receive and publish the minutes. The next meeting is May 21 - May 24 in Prince George, BC, hosted by the Northern Lights Life Skills Association.

I've added some things to the website:

  1. In the Accreditation In Canada page, there's now a link to ALSCO's Guidelines For Mentors. It's interesting to compare it to SLSA's Mentors' Manual, to be found in SLSA's Accreditation page. SLSA has adopted ASLSC's adaptation of ALSCO's competencies.
  2. In Upcoming Events you'll find the announcement of ASLSC's Nov. 13 to 15/98 Conference and Annual General Meeting, and the news that we've scheduled a regular Chat time: 1 to 3 pm Pacific Daylight time, the first Sunday of every month. If I'm not there, just carry on without me. Follow the links for operating instructions.
  3. In the NewStart Model of Life Skills Coaching page there's now a Basic Life Skills Program description, including the lesson plan layout and core lesson sequence.
  4. In the What Is a Life Skills Coach? page there's now a list of occupations that can benefit from Life Skills Coach training.
  5. For those who have recently joined or have misplaced their Bulletin files, the Email Bulletin Archives are updated up to and including this message. And all the strange acronyms that I've used in this message are explained in the Coaching Associations page.
