Strategies for mentoring
Wrightman, L. S. Mentoring: Methodologies for Assessing Mentoring. Paper presented at
the Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Association. Los Angeles, August, 1981.
Two approaches to the development of a scientific concept are presented. The first is
the limited operationalization approach which is dependent upon the availability of a
scale, test or clinical procedure. The second is the "popular consensus"
approach which often results from the sudden popularity of a phenomenon. Mentoring is
considered as an example of the second pathway and has resulted, as is often the case, in
a lack of precise definition.
Proposed in this article are the development of precise definitions and the application
of a multiplicity of methods to the study of the relationship.
